The Revolution will not be Televised: It’s the Power Chat Zone

Please use this page to post any comments or observations on today’s extravaganza from the O2 in London.

Yes it’s Power Snooker Day, for one day only. Try as I might I can’t ignore it, as a regular said earlier in the week, it’s like staring at a baby with earrings, you can’t help looking but just wondering….

WHY?

  1. Power snooker? Maybe, but needs to be tweaked a lot. Maybe shorter timeslots last five minutes so smartasses can’t
    walk around wasting time.
Final could have been great but to easy to run away with.Maybe play to a 1000 points instead, or take away the double
    opening shot.
The yobs have to stay locked up in the zoo.

Embarrasing stuff for unsupecting fans and out the window with the whining about being to late for kids to watch.
No sane parents will let their kid watch such crap.

  7. Surely this can’t be what the organisers (or Barry Hearn) wanted when they decided to encourage audience participation? A few drunken blokes singing and shouting whilst the rest of the crowd are sitting on their hands does not constitute atmosphere. It’s nothing like the darts atmosphere really – it’s more like the tail end of the day at a Test match when everyone’s had enough except for the few bladdered lads who can’t actually stand up.

  11. This is horrible to watch, i was quite looking forward to it but its like watching a car crash

Comment by Andy — October 30, 2010 @ 7:30 pm ReplyReply to this comment

  12. @Greg P.: To my shame I am still watching – a bit like people used to watch freak shows at the circus in Victorian times. The break is far too important – maybe break off then have a choice – carry on and pot at least four balls or hand it to your oppo to pot two – penalties if either fail.

  13. big win for ronnie over carter.

Comment by maza — October 30, 2010 @ 7:04 pm ReplyReply to this comment

  14. You still watching this SB? I think the break rules is the really weak part here. You dont even have to pot a red off the break to stay at the table… all Ronnie had to do there at about the 10 minute arm, was break off and keep potting a few simple balls and he’s won the match. He’s essentially running down the clock…

  15. Any help?

    O’Sullivan 333-196 Brecel
    Ding ?-? White
    Selby ?-? Carter
    Robertson 274-311 Murphy

So much hype and such an unpro coverage!….

  18. @snookerbacker: What is it with these promoters who think the only way to make snooker more exciting is to widen the pockets? I think it tends to lessen the quality as the players go for silly shots they would never dream of playing normally and they take liberties with their position as well. Together with a shot clock, it’s just a recipe for more mistakes, and I’m not convinced that makes the spectacle any better.

Imagine the uproar if they introduced a new football just before the World Cup that made it impossible to shoot accurately from distance and made goalkeepers fumble straightforward saves. Hmm…why are the people that run these things so clueless? :-(

  22. @jibjib: I’ve enjoyed it as a novelty, in the same way as I enjoyed Snooker Loopy. But who wants to hear that every day? Without analysing it too much, they need to get rid of the bonus points for centuries as the games are too one-sided as it is anyway. It’s been fairly obvious in all matches with 5 minutes to go who has won. They should shorten them to 20 minutes and tighten the pockets.

  23. Lots of things wrong with this format, but it does have some promise.

Some of the play has been a bit brainless though – I don’t quite get why some players are smacking the balls about looking for a fluke at the end of a “rack”. Haven’t they worked out that they’re playing for points and not frames? Also, 20 seconds is a lot longer than some of them make it look. I’m not in favour of shot-clocks but, as we’ve got one, you’d think they’d have a rough idea how long they’ve got. Some of the guys are playing like it’s a 5 second shot clock.

Hmmph – actually, on the whole, I’ve decided I’m not that keen on Power Snooker at all.

  25. @onestep: Onestep, as the co-pilot I can’t believe you missed the ‘Mustard Shirt’ reference during Ali’s interview, surely stealing all the limelight from the power players. Top Drawer from the Captain.

there are a lot of tactical things the players could work out like time wasting.
but this is against the spirit of the game.
