He has been logging away on here now for well over a year and this means we have been able to cut through the Cap to reveal the real Ali. I don’t feel that there is anything we can’t talk to him about now man-to-man. But if you do ask him the wrong question then you’d better be prepared for the wrath of the Captain. Who can forget when the hapless John Evans asked him about his pilot’s licence when he’d just won his first ranker, coincidentally, a word that rhymes with that was used not long afterwards in the privacy of the Captain’s quarters to refer to everyone’s favourite Welsh Voice of Snooker. The Cap is also known for his highly demonstrative way around the table, he can never be accused of hiding his feelings and when he thinks he’s having a bit of bad luck no table or floor is safe from his clenched fist or swiping cue. Ali is like our very own Jim Carrey of the Baize and contorts his face into some obscure shapes at times, he was once talent spotted by the English National Gurning Team but chose snooker instead. Well what is the world of facial contortions loss ended up being snooker’s gain I say. While I’m here, I may as well dispel another myth, Ali is not called El Capitano by his friends, despite what Rob Walker would have you believe, they actually call him Spud.
