Unusual Betting Patterns on Sky Shootout Match

Filed under: snookerbacker @ 5:38 pm

There have been some suspicious betting patterns reported on the forthcoming Sky Shootout match between Joe Jogia and Matt Selt. This has been referred to the WPBSA.

The official statement reads:

‘The WPBSA have been made aware, by bookmakers of unusual betting patterns on the match due to take place at the Snooker Shootout in Blackpool on Saturday 28th January 2012 between Joe Jogia and Matthew Selt. An unusually high number of bets have been placed on Selt to win the match. The matter has been referred to Nigel Mawer, Head of the WPBSA’s Integrity Unit.’

WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson said  “Maintaining the integrity of snooker is essential to protect the sport. Working with our partners we will take all necessary steps to establish what has taken place and take appropriate action.

  1. Hopefully, that will be the case. It would be nice if Jogia was now encouraged to be ill and scratch the match, as whatever the outcome, people will still draw conclusions. I notice Betfair have no scruples in continuing to take bets on it (1.46 matched on something that would never be stronger than 1.80 in the real world). It’s a shame, as whatever the circumstances surrounding this, World Snooker have done a good job of stamping this sort of behaviour out since the troubles of a couple of years ago.

  2. @L Feltham – I just think the firms will refund whatever the result is. The fact the WPBSA have put it out there (which they didn’t with the match you mention, though it was all over the internet of course) is enough to justify not paying out on the result in my opinion.

  3. That didn’t stop Jamie Burnett and Stephen Maguire playing out their 9-3 though did it SB? That was advertised in the newspapers the day before, in the style of ‘A Murder is Announced’.

What can Jogia do now? He’s slightly more likely to lose that frame than win it, so there’s a good chance that the half baked plan will come off. How are firms going to be able to judge whether people deserve paying or not?

  4. Anyone who bets on this is basically looking at the bookies not settling the bet and then eventually refunding it. Also, now it has been exposed it’s highly unlikely that any half baked plans that might have been in the pipeline will be carried through.
