The UK Championship Final Preview

MJW used to have hair.

It’s ten years since John Higgins beat Mark Williams 10-4 to scoop the UK title and this had just knocked this off the UK number one spot. Today, and with less hair between them the two battlers square up for a rematch in today’s final.

Somehow, Williams is there. I’m not really sure how it happened but he’s managed it. His performances have been less than impressive but what has got him through is his impeccable attitude and will to win.

Just like his opponent today, he just refuses to know when he is beaten and his comeback against Murphy last night demonstrated why he, along with Higgins must surely be ranked as one of the best match players the game has ever seen.

The head to heads since 1995 sees Higgins ahead by 12 matches to 11, but this masks a very clear pattern of how meetings between these two have gone. They seem to largely win in ‘blocks’ against the other, Higgins wins 4 on the trot, Williams wins the next 7, John wins 3, then in their last meeting over in China on the way to his return to ranking tournament success Williams beats John 5-2.

But with these two the history books are largely, as Sir Clive of Everton himself might say ‘of only academic interest’ as it’s all about how they feel today that counts.

As I stand to win around the same on each of them in the outrights I won’t be having a bet on this today and can relax and just enjoy what should be a cracking match.

John used to have brown hair

Higgins to me has looked unstoppable all week, whatever you think of him as a person you cannot fault his attitude and class on the baize. But the same applies to Williams. I think Mark will up his game a notch today and not be the pushover that some might expect him to be. Bet365 have him at best price 11/5 to win compared to 6/4 in some places. Higgins is best priced 40/85 over at Boylesports.

If I was having a bet I’d probably go with the overs on frames. Boylesports offering best priced 5/6 for there to be more than 16 frames in the match. I hope it’s close, I think it will be and as a fan I’d like to see Williams win as I love the way he plays the game.

Hopefully this will be one to savour and will live up to the billing. Good luck if you are having a bet on it.

P.S. Just noticed that none other than Ali himself has commented on his Snokvent picture yesterday. But something tells me that today’s entry may get a few more hits……..
